The present study aims to explore the behavioralpatterns of the social knowledge construction process andthe online searching behaviors in a collaborative problemsolving learning activity for high school students, andfurther compares the different behavioral patterns of thehigh- and low-performing teams. A total of 78 high schoolstudents from two schools participated. This study appliedsequential analysis to analyze the students’ social knowl-edge construction and online searching behavior from alarge amount of screen-recording data. Interestingly, theresults indicate that social interaction that is irrelevant tothe discussion task is significantly correlated with aca-demic-related discussion content. Reaching a higher cog-nitive level of social knowledge construction (e.g.,reaching agreement or applying newly constructed mean-ing) contributes to a successful team project. For onlinesearching behavior, the high-performing teams exhibitedsystematic online searching behavior and concentrated onthe task, while the low-performing teams displayed chaoticsearching behavior and were distracted from the task athand, and seemed to rarely propose their searched results orideas in their discussions. Based on the results, severalpossible explanations and suggestions are proposedincluding the need to promote more adaptive motivationand to provide scaffolding for collaborative skills
