The article summarises the qualitative research on prologues in German Medieval Studies – 48 essays, published between 1955 and 2009, are evaluated regarding their approaches and findings. On this basis, the article concludes thatthe hermeneutic research, looking at single passages or single prologues, should be complemented by a quantitative access to also enable comprehensive findings.
